In marketing, a sales funnel is the process of attracting strangers to your product or service, then turning them into customers and delighting them so much that they promote your business for you. For this reason, a successful sales funnel is crucial for any B2C or B2B company that wants to grow. But building and optimizing an effective sales funnel takes time, dedication and ongoing improvement to ensure the highest ROI.
One of the most important aspects of a sales funnel is ensuring that you have high conversion rates and low acquisition costs. Achieving this goal requires a clear understanding of how to calculate conversion metrics and how they relate to each other.
The conversion rate is the percentage of leads that become sales divided by the total number of qualified leads. This metric provides a simple and straightforward way to gauge the effectiveness of your sales funnel. A low conversion rate means that you are not converting enough of your potential customers into paying customers. While a high conversion rate does not guarantee success, it does indicate that you are on the right track.
A high conversion rate also means that your average sale value is high, meaning that your prospects are willing to spend more on your products or services than they would otherwise. This can be accomplished by offering discounts, free downloadable content, or other incentives that make your offers more attractive to new customers.
Once you have established a healthy conversion rate, you can start to focus on lowering your acquisition costs. This can be done by using email marketing automation, creating loyalty programs, or reducing your advertising budget. By minimizing your acquisition costs, you can increase your ROI without sacrificing customer acquisition.
One final aspect of a great sales funnel is implementing upsells and cross-sells to encourage repeat purchases. This is a technique that is widely used in B2C businesses.
For example, a mountain bike company might run Facebook ads to attract outdoorsy customers and then direct them to a landing page that explains the benefits of the company’s products and offers them a discount when they sign up for their email newsletter.
Groupon and Netflix are other examples of companies that use this strategy to convert customers to higher-priced plans.
Whether your business is selling big-ticket items or subscription services, it's important to have an efficient sales funnel that pays for itself.
