Managed Vs Unmanaged Hosting - Making the Right Choice

The right hosting plan can be the difference between success and failure for your website. But with so many different options available, it can be difficult to know which option is best for you. One of the biggest decisions you’ll need to make is whether or not you want your server managed by a professional, or whether you want to take on that responsibility yourself.

The choice between managed and unmanaged hosting comes down to how much control and customization you want, as well as what kind of site you have. Managed hosting typically involves a professional taking care of a variety of tasks, including security, backups, software updates, and performance optimization. This can free up your time so that you can focus on other aspects of your business.

However, the price for this peace of mind can be significant. On average, a fully managed hosting plan costs about two times as much as an unmanaged server. However, once you get past the first four levels of managed services, the cost differential tends to be a lot smaller.

Unmanaged servers do not include any kind of technical support from the host, so you will be responsible for all of these tasks yourself. This can be a big burden if you don’t have the time or expertise to manage your server. Unmanaged servers are usually reserved for bigger businesses with in-house IT teams or individuals who have the resources and knowledge to handle server maintenance themselves.

If you do decide to go with an unmanaged server, it’s important to understand exactly what this means for you. For instance, if you aren’t comfortable with using the command line, then an unmanaged server isn’t for you. You’ll need to be able to access and edit your files through the server’s command line interface, or you’ll need someone on hand who is familiar with this process.

Additionally, you’ll need to be able to install any software that you need to run your website. This includes things like CMS tools, monitoring and security systems, and other applications. You’ll also need to be able to manage your own bandwidth and security protocols.

Why Choose an Unmanaged Server?
Some sites require special configurations at the server level to function properly. This could be because of a security requirement or if the application in question isn’t optimized for a managed server. In these cases, an unmanaged server may be the only option.

Other reasons people opt for an unmanaged server are that they want to tinker with their servers, or they’re looking to save money by taking on some of the management tasks themselves. It’s worth mentioning that, regardless of your reasoning, it is still always possible to switch back and forth between managed and unmanaged hosting if you find that the other doesn’t work for you.
